Mongolia is an Inner Asian country with a population of about 3.3 million, known for its nomadic culture and harsh continental climate. Russian is widely used in business, education and among the older generation (Mongolia was a socialist country closely tied to the USSR). Geographical proximity to China makes logistics extremely convenient.
Ultra-cold climate. Ulaanbaatar is the coldest capital in the world: average January temperature is -25°C to -30°C, absolute minimum reaches -45°C. The heating season lasts 8 months (September to May). In such conditions, the thermal insulation properties of wall material are critical. AAC thermal conductivity (0.09–0.16 W/m·K) is 5–10 times lower than traditional Mongolian brick (0.7–0.8) and concrete (1.5). A 400 mm AAC wall is thermally equivalent to 800–1000 mm brickwork.
Ger district reconstruction program. Ulaanbaatar is known for its ger districts — vast areas of traditional Mongolian yurts (gers) where about 60% of the capital's population lives. These districts lack centralized heating, water supply and sewage; residents heat yurts with coal and wood, leading to catastrophic air pollution in winter (Ulaanbaatar regularly ranks in the top 5 most polluted cities in the world by air quality). The Mongolian government is implementing a large-scale ger district reconstruction program: construction of apartment buildings with centralized heating for resettlement of ger residents. This creates huge demand for energy-efficient wall materials, including AAC blocks.
Mining economy. Mongolia has huge mineral reserves (coal, copper, gold, uranium), the mining industry forms the basis of the economy. Development of deposits requires construction of shift camps, administrative buildings, social infrastructure (schools, hospitals) in remote areas. For such facilities, AAC blocks are optimal due to: (1) Low weight (simplifies logistics to remote areas); (2) Fast masonry speed (reduces construction time of shift camps); (3) High thermal insulation (critical for harsh winter conditions).
Proximity to China advantage. Mongolia borders China, main border crossings — Erenhot/Zamyn-Uud and Gansu/Sharyn gol. Road delivery from northern Chinese provinces (Inner Mongolia, Gansu) to Ulaanbaatar takes only 3–7 days. This is one of the shortest logistics legs among all Russian-speaking markets. Compared to delivery to Russia (30–45 days) or Central Asia (20–30 days), delivery to Mongolia is several times faster and cheaper.
Prospects and recommendations. The Mongolian market has unique advantages for Chinese suppliers: geographical proximity, Russian as business language, huge demand for energy-efficient materials in the ger district reconstruction program. Recommendations: (1) Find a local distributor in Ulaanbaatar; (2) Start with AAC blocks for residential construction (the most in-demand segment); (3) Consider participating in government ger district reconstruction programs through tenders; (4) Use the advantage of fast delivery from China to create competitive advantage in price and delivery speed.
