ALC panels: pros and cons of reinforced aerated concrete panels

ALC (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete panels) belongs to the same aerated concrete family as AAC blocks, but due to internal reinforcement it has fundamentally different characteristics and application areas. We break down the pros and cons of ALC panels.

Pro 1 — Strength and fixing. The internal double-sided reinforcement mesh gives ALC panels bending and fracture strength significantly exceeding AAC blocks. Fixing capacity: 50–80 kg per point (with special anchors), allowing direct mounting of water heaters, kitchen cabinets, TVs and sanitary fixtures. For AAC blocks, such loads require additional structural solutions.

Pro 2 — Installation speed. ALC are factory large-format panels (length 2.4–6 m, width 600 mm), installed by dry method. Installation speed is 3–5 times higher than block masonry: one installer completes 15–20 m² per shift. For a 1000 m² facility, partition construction time is reduced from 2–3 weeks to 3–5 days.

Pro 3 — Surface flatness and space saving. ALC panel surface has high flatness (±2 mm), allowing direct puttying without prior plastering. Panel thickness 75–200 mm, which is 50–100 mm thinner than block masonry with plaster. For a 100 m² apartment, this provides an additional 2–3 m² of usable area.

Pro 4 — Versatility. High-strength ALC panels can be used not only for internal partitions, but also for exterior walls, roof panels and even floor slabs. This allows implementing the concept of 'one material — many functions', simplifying design and procurement. Con 1 — Higher cost. Material cost of ALC panels is 30–50% higher than AAC blocks, plus special fasteners and installer wages, total cost is higher. However, considering savings on plastering work and reduced construction time, the total cost may be comparable.

Con 2 — Transport and cutting. Large panels require specialized transport and lifting equipment. On-site cutting requires a special saw with a diamond blade, cannot be chopped like blocks. Opening processing and chasing for utilities require experience and precision. Conclusion: ALC panels are justified for projects with high requirements for deadlines and surface quality (hotels, apartments, offices), as well as for partitions with heavy mounted elements. For small projects or limited budgets, AAC blocks are more economical.
